In Ms. Vincent's Intro to Drawing and Design course, students were inspired to explore the fascinating realm of basketry by hand sewing their own baskets. Students gained a deeper understanding of the history of basket weaving and its significant influence on the cultures of Native Americans, Asians, and Africans. By mastering the coiling technique, a fundamental aspect of African and Native American cultures, students developed a sense of community by wrapping yarn tightly around rope and sewing it into itself to create a strong base, then building the sides of the basket with the same rope. Students sketched out the shape of their basket as a way of planning out the shape they were going to create, and if they were going to include cultural influences of beadwork or geometric patterns from the three cultures they explored when learning about this 10,000 year old basket technique of coiling.
